motif (mo-teef):
2. Music A short rhythmic or melodic passage that is repeated or evoked in various parts of a composition.

ostinato:
A short melody or pattern that is constantly repeated, usually in the same part at the same pitch.

Technically, these are still in his playing. They're just music terms. But his motives and ostinatos have shifted from the more classical European ideas to more straight-out rock licks and riffing. But he still uses so many of the same lead devices, while the overall songwriting style has shifted more than the lead-playing style. If you change the way you compose, the same licks will take on a slightly different aspect because their environment has changed. They adapt to the sound as you change the chord progressions, voicings, rhythms, style. Excellent for recycling purposes, and why Ronni can use the same licks in metal, rock, pop, contemporary, avant-garde/experimental, folk-rock, techno, and whatever else comes his way. Each style provides a new setting and keeps the same ol' same ol' sounding fresh. Works like a charm.

Love his playing, but he does throw the same stuff into just about everything he plays on, which is part of why "The New Territory" sounds fresher to my ears than anything TNT has done in a while. It's devoid of a good portion of his clichés. By the time you get to the Japan bonus track "Don't Come To Near," he's already tossing in that same fast descending run he has used on the last three or four TNT albums...again. "A Constitution" is one of the most interesting and unusual solos we've been treated to in a while, especially with its cool chromaticism. That's a keeper.

When I think about that article, talking about alternating bars of composed ideas with open bars to improv lines on, it sounds like he was setting himself up to be the type of guitarist he has become: an improviser. And it really sounds like he started acheiving that around "Realized Fantasies," where most of the solos sound more off-the-cuff. Increasingly, he has moved in the direction of improvisation, although some melody ideas still sound worked out to varying degrees.

Of course, improvisation comes in many forms. I don't know how the guy works, nor how he thinks, but I could imagine him jamming over the recorded solo sections to get inside them, keeping or scrapping ideas along the way, then hitting record and going for the gold ring. Who knows? Maybe several times, then keeping the best take, or cutting/pasting some of the best ideas from multiple takes. That's how a lot of musicians do it. It's a tough call, because he sticks so close to the ideals of his playing style, there's no doubt he can nail something in a single take. Being happy with what you did is another story. I have a feeling that there's more to the creative process there than just flying by the seat of his pants, especially if he takes pride in his work (which I think he does). Something like the chromatic part of "A Constitution" seems like something that developed, at least to some degree.

One thing I'm certain of is that his overall creative process happens over time in many instances, since I've seen a lot of video of soundchecks where stuff he's just casually goofing on later appears as main riffs, rhythms, or just licks in songs. Some don't appear for several years it seems, but they do appear eventually. And, after all, even improvisation comes from what we already know: it's not drawn from the very air or from the cosmos. Enough time has probably passed where the lines between composing and improvising have become very fine and blurred, and the process is condensed when it comes time to sit down and arrange the ideas. It's his life and livelihood, so it stands to reason he has a great wealth of ideas to mine. I'm sure there are a lot of seeds that just need a little watering. Even if they seem totally improvised, they are coming from something pre-existing: the fingers don't just play something that's not in their memory. Everything has been tried in a casual, private setting at some point.

Those are just my observations.

Well, I'm back. I've listened to "The New Territory" at least 10-12 times over the past couple of weeks. First off let me say that Ronni's guitar tone on this album is killer. I think it's his best tone since "Realized Fantasies". All the other stuff I said in this thread about Ronni's lead playing? Well after listening to this album let me say that I owe you all an apology. My early posts weren't negative enough.

Anyways have a nice time here now that Mr. Negative has finally given up on Ronni and 15 or so years later I've finally come to agree with Atlantics decision to drop TNT after the Realized Fantasies album. I should have done the same. If Ronni had played solos like this early in his music career, he would have had an excellent career as a police officer, or librarian, or lumberjack, or as Morty Black's bass tech.

Later.

I think Ronni have used most off his life to find the "perfect" tone, and it`s getting very good, but I must say I miss that KOTNT guitarsound Smile Thats the reason why I begun to play guitar myself..and I think the album was or is one of the best metalalbum ever..

Yes..
Ronni has tried to find the best sound, but I think that he know the best styles, and have known it for a long time Very Happy
He can always be better, but that would be difficult for him... He is already a great guitarplayer Cool

...[a job] as Morty Black's bass tech.

Now that statement was entirely uncalled for but perhaps, given the background, not entirely unexpected. There are certainly more ways of expressing ones opinion without behaving like a classless troglodyte. That sort of insult is simply pathetic.

As Woo said... have a nice day.
