It's the purple tortoise Dunlop Tortex H3 jazz pick. It's the thickest of the Dunlop jazz picks, and it has the pointed tip (there's a purple one with a rounded tip: you DON'T want that one!). I don't know about the index finger/thumb gripping style or the "more energy up than down" deal, but picking from the wrist is very important, I've learned. I used to pick from the joints of the fingers (so my thumb and index finger moved a lot), but I've learned to pick from the wrist (and just a little from the elbow), which makes a HUGE difference. I went through the pains of breaking old habits, and now I pick from the wrist—like the wrist is a fulcrum point—and that has certainly helped. You can see ronni use this approach on video. On YouTube, notice how he can go from the rhythm playing to the machine-gun fills without a drastic change in how he holds the pick for either technique (although, sometimes there are shifts in the grip during the course of solos, but mainly for adjusting the angle that the tip of the pick hits the strings at). You can see this in the "My Religion" live on Norwegian tv clip, where he switches between riffs, rhythms, and fills. It's a rare LIVE performance, since Norwegian tv seems to love having their bands perform to the studio tracks, which looks nuts to the musician viewer. It helps to have the right tone as well. :^D (Not so much flanging, i.e. oscillation from the flanger.) His tone is surprisingly clean, clear, and uncluttered; very glassy, except for wah-drenched passages. Less is more. That's about all I can say, as far as tone goes, but I'd love to discuss licks and riffs, as I mentioned. Cheers. |
