Hi. I just noticed this topic. Fun to read and "meet" the musicians on the forum. My name is Dennis. I live in scenic western Massachusetts, near the borders of Vermont and New Hampshire. I've recently returned to school as a full-time student, majoring in music. Besides learning how to formally write/read proper music notation, I'm getting a lot of ear-training, plus I'm studying world music and percussion, such as African drumming. I've studied a little classical, but I'm moving in a decidedly jazz direction in school right now. I'm also studying recording/producing (ProTools), a field I plan to enter more fully soon, because I just love the in-studio creative sound-sculpting process.
I'm very intensely into Middle Eastern-influenced music: Indian, Arabian, and Egyptian sounds. I'm learning a lot from a couple books, a lot of listening and exposure (here's where the ear-training comes in handy), plus I'm hoping to take lessons from a local musician who plays in a multi-cultural global music band (they even have bellydancers! ). I have a huge passion for global/ethnic music, and I hope to begin collecting and playing various Middle Eastern string and percussion instruments once I get the money flowing again. btw, did I say I'm a poor college student?
I use tons of gear. I'm a full-blown gearhead. I love to collect it, play it, talk about it, dream about it, look at it...
Guitars:
Two custom-built Hamburguitars, 1 Ronni LeTekrø model ESP from Japan, a white Kramer, an old customized Fender Strat (once belonged to Tekrø), and a cheap Ibanez nylon-string electric acoustic (that never stays in tune and has terrible intonation).
Amps:
Modded Marshall JCM800 Lead, plus several other Vox and Marshall. Tech 21 Trademark 10 (awesome for warm-up or quiet practice that won't piss off the neighbours).
Recording:
Roland VS and Roland monitors, Lexicon Reflex, Ibanez HD1000, Ibanez HD1500, BOSS DE200, BBE dual Sonic Maximizer, Presonus PQ, Zoom 9150, Roland RE-150 Space Echo (thanks, Chris), Hughes & Kettner Replex, BOSS RRV10, BOSS RPS10, BOSS RSD10, BOSS RDD10, BOSS RPH10 x3, BOSS RBF10 x2, BOSS RCE10 x2, BOSS RCL10 x2, BOSS RGE10, BOSS ROD10, BOSS RPW7, BOSS ME-8, BOSS GL100, BOSS RV70, Roland SRV2000, Roland DM300, Vox Tonelab, Tech21 Sansamp Classic, BOSS DR770 Rhythm, BOSS DR202 Groove, Korg MS2000 synth, Electro Harmonix Micro Synth, E-bow, glass slide, plectrums, teeth, imagination
Pedals:
BOSS OD-1 x3, BOSS CE-2 x2, BOSS BF-2 x2, BOSS DD-3 x2, BOSS PH-1r, BOSS OD-3, BOSS FT-2, BOSS DC-3, ProCo RAT2 (the ultimate distortion), Dunlop Crybaby Wah, Dunlop Q Zone, Digitech Whammy II.
Have previously owned:
Alesis Quadraverb IV, Alesis Nanoverb, ADA MP1 preamp, Crate BV 50w, H&K Triplex, Dunlop 535Q, Line6 POD, Line6 PODXT, Line6 FM4, Line6 DL4, Deltalab Effectron, BOSS VF1, BOSS MA-1, BOSS GT-5, BOSS AW-2, BOSS CH-1, BOSS CS-2, BOSS CS-3, BOSS DD-2, BOSS DM-2, BOSS DM-3, BOSS DSD-2, BOSS DSD-3, BOSS EH-2, BOSS GE-7, BOSS GE-7B, BOSS HM-2, BOSS MT-2, BOSS DS-1, BOSS NF-1, BOSS NS-2, BOSS OC-2, BOSS PH-1, BOSS PH-1r, BOSS PH-2, BOSS PQ-4, BOSS PS-3, BOSS RV-2, BOSS RV-3, BOSS RV-5, BOSS SD-2, BOSS TW-1, Marshall DRP1, Dunlop Fasel Wah, Carl Martin PlexiTone, Marshall JH1, Roland DM100, EMMA Discombobulator, Danelectro DE1, Tech21 XXL, Ibanez AF9, Zoom 4040, ESP LTD, BC Rich Mockingbird, American Fender Strat, JBL Player (yikes!), Fender Chorus (forget model).
I'm planning to buy another PODxt, because they are great for direct recording. That, or the new Vox Tonelab LE, which is just coming out this month. I dream of owning a Matchless DC amp (expensive!). One of these days....And I'm considering a Pritchard amp, because this guy has made the most tube-sounding solid states (lower maintennance appeal), without using all the sampling and modeling gimmickry. I also have my eyes on a cool 12-Tone Plus Invader, a semi-microtonal guitar, designed by a guy out of NY. They have only the most pleasant-sounding of the notes from the harmonic overtone series (incl. a neutral third and a true seventh).
For guitarists, the player I'm studying most intensely at the moment is Jeff Martin, previously of Canadian rockers, the Tea Party, currently a solo artist. The Tea Party is like Led Zep meets the Doors in Kashmir den of ill repute, with Middle Eastern instruments, 70's and modern rock styles, industrial and techno elements, etc., all rolled into one.
I'm also into Bill MacKechnie of upstate NY band Anubis Spire, a progressive rock outfit that is reminiscent of Pink Floyd, Rush, King Crimson, and Hendrix after being locked away in the Egyptian pyramids.
Those are my two favorite players at the moment. I'm also into Al DiMeola, John McLaughlin, John Scofield, Shawn Lane, John Norum, Gary Moore, Arjen Lucassen, Bill Nelson, Brian May, Prasanna, and too many more to list. Way too many bands. My tastes are eclectic and all over the map. I listen to a lot of non guitar-oriented music as well.
I've been playing for a few years, and I can't picture life without music. I have this fear that, if I get my hands on a few Middle Eastern instruments (tablas, saz, oud), I may never pick up the guitar again. But music will always be in the picture.
I'm putting together a project with various musicians in the northeast. Like my tastes, the material's pretty eclectic, all over the map. Progressive global heavy rock. I've been in no hurry, because I'm evolving rapidly in new directions right now, but I do have to draw the line somewhere and get the ball rolling. Hehehe...the great procrastinator.
It's really awesome to see some very young musicians on the forum with great listening tastes and influences. I'm so used to seeing kids who are influenced by Green Day, Slipknot, Marilyn Manson, Korn, Creed, and all that.
Well, that was lengthy. Hehehe...and I could probably go on. I love to talk music, gear, playing, etc. etc. etc.
