I have started this thread as there have been some exellent tabs done dpne by a guest of Ronni's tricks.
But they are under the invisible noise solo thread.

Hopefully if we start putting them here people will be able to find them easier.

This is the start of the song "You'll Be There" From the album "My Religion". This is written in regular tuning though Ronni often use D# tunning.

-----------------|-----------------|
-----------------|-----------------|
-----------------|-----------------|
-----------------|-----------------|
-4---4---6-6--7-|-9--9--11-11--12|
-2---2---4-4--5-|-7--7---9-9--10-|

This may be wrong as my ear isnt really toptrained, but I think it sounds good enough Wink.

Here's a cool ronni trick. And simple too. Just pick a note, say, the G (Gb on my guitar) at the 15th fret, and pull the string down off the fretboard like you were bending the note. Then return. Repeat as many times as it gets yer rocks off. And use a wah: bring the note up in pitch until it's off the fretboard while bringing the wah all the way back (so sound is deep 'n' low) then, as you lower the note back to pitch, kick the wah up (pitch filter rises). It's a tricky little number on the ears, and it sounds neato.

Code:

|--15b/---\---15b/---\---15b/---\----|
|------------------------------------|
|------------------------------------|
|------------------------------------|
|------------------------------------|
|------------------------------------|

Rather than bending by pushing the string up toward you, pull it down toward the floor, right off the fretboard. Listen to...hmmm...I think it's the beginning of the "Somebody Told You" solo for that tricky bit o' string-pullery.

Jazz guitar guru John Scofield does the same deal on the low E string, pushing it right over the top of the fretboard to get these slinky, slippery little glurps of sound. It's pretty neat, and once ya do it, ya can't stop. It will infect your playing, annoy your teachers, and freak out your cats (your dog will just cock his head and look at you inquisitively).

Yeah I love those wierd noise.

Steve Vai does it as well.

He mutes the strings with his left hand at about the 3rd fret or where ever by placing his hand flat on the strings.

Then with his right hand he puts his palm of his hand
any where on the neck below his left hand,
grips the neck with his fingers and thumb and rolls his hand round to push the strings down towards the high E pushing it off the edge of the neck in a quick motion then rolling the strings back to original postion.
Then roll in the opposite direction to push Low E off or Low B if you have 7 string!!

You can keep doing this whilst moving your hand up and down the neck.

Sounds great, I am going to do a video of silly noises next I think. Laughing Laughing

Another noise / technique I like that Ronni does is with pull offs and harmonics.

he does this

Code:

-------------------------
-------------------------
--7-0-5-0-7-0-5-0-7-0-5--
-------------------------
-------------------------
-------------------------

Using pull off's whilst holding his finger lightly on the 12 fret of the same string to let the harmonics ring out.

An example of it is on the self titled Vagabond album
its about 3:50 on the song automatic.

You can also hold the inside flat of your finger across all the strings at the 12th fret with your right hand and move the pull off pattern back and forth across the strings to to make different harmonics.

Code:

------------------------------------
------------------------------------
--7-0-5-0---------------------------
-----------7-0-5-0-----------7-0-5-0
--------------------7-0-5-0---------
------------------------------------
------------------------------------

Try experimenting with different ways.

You can also see him do it in his solo on the live in Madrid video. I got it yesterday, its great.

Cheers
Neil

Here's the way I've been playing the main riff to "You'll Be There" from MR:

Code:

|---------------------------------------|
|---------------------------------------|
|---------------------------------------|
|--------------------0-1----------------|
|---------0-1--3--3---------------------|
|--3--3-------------------3--3--[etc.]--|

Here's another favorite that I was trying to figure out for the longest time, until I came across a live WWG concert video with excellent close-up footage of this lick/technique in action. The fingering is crucial (hence the reason I couldn't ever quite make it sound right). You want to use double-picking (tremolo picking; fly picking; or whatever you feel like calling it...after, all it's just a term). Begin with a fast double-picked glissando (super-fast picking while sliding up into position at whatever fret you begin the descent on, in this case 16). Keep sliding that ring finger to shift your positions...and don't stop picking until the open string portion of the lick! Fingering style ronnis uses appears below between (), and the lick ends with downstrokes and hammer-ons/pull-offs to open strings. This is an E Dorian run. Use light muting throughout.

Code:

|----------------------------------------------
|----------------------------------------------
|--/16-14-16\14-12-14\11-9-11\9-7-9\6-4h6p4p0--
|----------------------------------------------
|---(3..1..3..3..1..3..3.1.3..3.1.3.3.1.3.1..)-
|----------------------------------------------

|------------------------------------|
|------------------------------------|
|--2h4p2p0---------------------------|
|----------2h4p2p0-------------------|
|-------------------2h4p2p0----------|
|---------------------------3b/p0----|

And you can try this one, using the index finger on the slide. Slide is quick, to get to the next position. Fingering as ronni uses in video is between (). It should sound very "mechanical." I think I caught this one in a Bad Habitz video:
Code:

|---------------------------------------------
|---------------------------------------------
|--2-4-2-0-2-4-2/5-7-5-0-5-7-5/7-9-7-0-7-9-7/-
|---------------------------------------------
|-(1.3.1...1.3.1.1.3.1...1.3.1.1.3.1...1.3.1)-
|---------------------------------------------

|---------------------------------------------|
|---------------------------------------15----|
|--9-11-9-0-9-11-9/12-14-12-0-12-14--14b/-----|
|---------------------------------------------|
|-(1..3.1...1..3.1..1..3..1....1..3...3..4)---|
|---------------------------------------------|

Have fun. Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

Hell yes !!!

It's the perfect opening for the song.
Back in 1989 when I heard it for the first time, I was like " ???????????????? "

" Who is this ?? "

So unique style to do things with guitar.

RONNI WE OBEY YOU !!!!

This is the intro riff with the muted bit you wanted.
I think this is how you play the muted bit.

Mute down hard and only pick the open string at the begining of each muted line.
The rest ( 2-4-2-0 ) is all hammers and pull offs.

Cheers

Wow. The forum sure got pretty dead. Maybe that's a good thing? I don't know. Anywho, here's my other absolute top fave, mixing open strings, economy picking, alternating picking, and...oh yeah...it's FAST. Very Happy Cool Very Happy

Play it like you mean it. Oh yeah: E minor. Very Happy

Code:

|---------------------------------------|
|---------------------------------------|
|---0h2h4p2p0--0-2-4-0-2h4p2------------|
|--4------------------------//-//-//----|
|-->>---------->-v->-v->----------------|
|---------------------------------------|

Key:
> =Downstroke (notes: pick downward; the 2 >> equals ONE downstroke, i.e. "economy picking." I like to think of them as "micro-sweeping")

v =Upstroke (note: pick upward)

// =Simile (note: repeat entire phrase preceding it as many times as your heart desires...or the song calls for it; you'll know what to do!)

h =hammer-on

p =pull-off

And now, a nice long run...

|--------------------------------------------
|--------------------------------------------
|---0h2h4p2p0--0-2-4-0-2h4p2-----------------
|--4-------------------------//-//-//-//-//--
|--------------------------------------------
|--------------------------------------------

|----------------------------------
|----------------------------------
|---0h5h7p5p0--0-5-7-0-5h7p5-------
|--7-------------------------//----
|----------------------------------
|----------------------------------

|-------------------------------------
|-------------------------------------
|---0h7h9p7p0--0-7-9-0-7h9p7----------
|--9-------------------------//-------
|-------------------------------------
|-------------------------------------

|--------------------------------------
|--------------------------------------
|----0h9h12p9p0--0-9-12-0-9h12p9-------
|--12----------------------------//----
|--------------------------------------
|--------------------------------------

|---------------------------------------------
|----0h9h12p9----0h10h13p10----0h11h14p11-----
|--12----------13------------14---------------
|---------------------------------------------
|---------------------------------------------
|---------------------------------------------

|--------------------15----|
|----0h12h15p12---15b/-----|
|--15----------------------|
|--------------------------|
|--------------------------|
|--------------------------|

Key:
You can figure it out.  There's economy picking, alternate picking, open strings, hammer-ons, pull-offs; all sorts of neat stuff.  Use muting discriminately...or indiscriminately.  It's your choice! :D

Anyway, have fun. That's what it's all about. Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy
